Big Brother Island

  • Diving Highlights:
    • Steep walls rising from a depth of 700m
    • Frequent encounters with large fish including hammerheads, thresher sharks, gray reef sharks, and whitetip deep-sea sharks
    • Stunning coral growth with countless schools of fish
  • Notable Wrecks:
    • Numidia: A 150m steam cargo ship that hit the reef in 1901, lying between 5m and 80m deep, overgrown with sea fans, hard, and soft corals.
    • Aida: An 82m steamer that sank in 1957, mostly broken apart, with the hull over 35m deep and beautifully overgrown.

Little Brother Island

  • North Plateau: Home to a cleaning station for reef sharks at a depth of 40m.
  • Marine Life: Dense marine biodiversity in a compact space with sponges, anemones, and vibrant hard and soft corals.

Daedalus Reef

The Daedalus Reef (Arabic: Abu el Kizan) lies 180 km south of the Brother Islands in a marine reserve, far from the mainland coast.

Key Highlights:

  • Landmark: Lighthouse from 1863, rebuilt in 1931, offering panoramic views of the 1000m long and 300m wide reef.
  • Currents & Conditions:
    • Exposed location with strong currents
    • Surrounded by steep walls with a southern plateau
    • Entire schools of hammerhead sharks and frequent dolphin sightings

Diving Features:

  • Wreck of the Zealot: Found at a depth of 90m, accessible only to technical divers. Steel girders are visible for recreational divers.
  • Southern Plateau (30-40m depth): Home to thresher sharks, schools of mackerel, doctor fish, and barracuda.
  • West Side: Anemone City—a paradise for clownfish lovers.

Elphinstone

Located about 11 km from the mainland near Marsa Alam, Elphinstone Reef is renowned for its dramatic currents and spectacular underwater scenery.

Key Highlights:

  • Dimensions: Approximately 450m long with plateaus at the north and south ends.
  • Topography: Steep walls adorned with gorgonians, wire corals, black corals, and soft corals.

Marine Life:

  • Frequent Sightings:
    • Longimanus (white tip deep-sea sharks)
